NOTD: Zoya Zuza and Rea, a match made in Heaven

I…I’m actually a little speechless for today’s mani. I honestly am finding myself just oogling my nails and going “hommina, hommina, hommina.” In fact it’s taken me like 20 minutes to write this post because I just keep looking at the picture and looking at my nails and going “oooh, aaaah”!

I decided to use Zuza on a whim when all the glitter came off of yesterday’s mani, Jilltastic is still doing her Try It On Tuesday and I just got Zuza from Copious for a penny a few days ago. She’s been sitting on my shelf, just waiting patiently for me to pick her up and pair her with someone….and Rea called to me. Rea was one of the first Zoya polishes I got and it’s still one of my favorites (along with Jem).

This was so simple to do! I started with two coats each of Rea and Zuza, then used Seche Vite since I had to get out the door fast for an appointment. When I got home I tossed on some French tip guides (I’m horrible at freehanding them) and did the tips. Rea only took one coat for full opacity, but Zuza over Rea was a bit too thin with one coat. I kept the nail guide on (you generally remove each guide as soon as you’re done painting that tip) and removed it right after I did a second coat, the line was still nice and crisp and not the slightest bit messed up, though I did only wait like 3 minutes after the first coat.

All right, enough of my blabbering (when I was apparently speechless, lol), check this baby out for yourself!

NOTD: Rainbow crystals over grey ombre

I have to admit, I am very surprised at just how much I like this mani. I mean, I thought it was a neat idea but seeing it on my fingers….just wow!

I’m really loving this week’s theme, I’m such a sucker for rainbow 🙂 I’m hoping to give some people inspiration for the nail art contest I’m hosting this month. I’ve already gotten 6 entries, which you can check out on my Facebook page, and I am loving what everyone’s coming up with! Remember that there are two categories and two winners, one for amateur and one for advanced, so don’t let the other entries discourage you if you think your nail art skills aren’t as advanced as theirs! All are welcome.

I wasn’t sure at first what I wanted the base color for my rainbow crystals to be. I asked a few friends and someone suggested black–I’d been considering white before but black just sounded so much nicer. I actually decided to do an ombre gradient for this, my thumb is white and it transitions to black on the pinky. I like this idea much better than I liked the plain white background idea! I actually only had 2 shades of grey, a light and a dark, so for my middle finger I mixed a drop of dark and 2 drops of light. I think it turned out great!

I’ve also been invited to march in the San Diego Pride Parade! I really hope I’m able to do it 😀

NOTD: Catching up!

This weekend was so busy I didn’t have any time to update you all on my nails! Saturday was spent with my mom celebrating Mother’s Day and then Sunday was spent with my honey’s family at a really nice winery for Mother’s Day. I had lots of fun!

First off, here’s a manicure inspired by a painting my good friend Kelli did for me. It’s a character from the video game Machinarium, and my art is nowhere near as good as hers but I’m still really happy with it.

Next up I did a special Mother’s Day mani on Saturday for my mom. This week’s theme is mom/mother’s day so they’re all done with her in mind!

I didn’t have a lot of time so I just removed my Machinarium art and replaced it with what was supposed to look like a tattoo banner that says “MOM”. Sorry for the blurry picture, it was so hard to even get one this “good”.

My mom is a tattoo fanatic and she’s always “bugging” me and saying I should get a tattoo…well, here it is!! I really like the idea of this mani but I don’t think I executed it very well. Next time I’ll do better, I’m sure, and there will definitely be a next time with this look!

Next up is the manicure I wore for Mother’s Day. My mom picked out the color combo which ended up matching the outfit I was going to wear very nicely! Can you tell Mom’s a fan of purple? 😉 Please excuse the tip wear, my base color wears really easily and I didn’t care enough to touch up >.>

Finally, on to today’s mani! It’s my favorite of the ones I’ve done recently. This one is inspired by my mom’s beliefs, paganism, and symbolizes the 5 elements of Wicca. From the pinky: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and Spirit. I’m definitely going to be wearing this one for a few days!!

NOTD: Simple purple pedi

I wanted a really simple pedicure yesterday. I needed something on my toes before I went out to run errands and have dinner with the in-laws and Rea was just sitting there, quietly, knowing it’s been far too long since I used her. She didn’t hold anything against me though, she knows she’s one of my favorites and that I’ll always keep coming back to her 😉

I slapped on a couple quick coats of Rea but I knew she needed something more. Nail stickers!! I haven’t used them in a while and I didn’t have time to do anything freehand. I think they’re just what this pedi needed, don’t you? And don’t these shoes just show off my toes perfectly? I got them a couple weeks ago and wear them every chance I get!

NOTD: Galaxy toes

To match my solar system nails I had to do galaxy nails! I’d never done them before but just my second try (on my left big toe) turned out better than my first. I had dense makeup sponges but I didn’t like the way it looked so I picked up some face buffing sponges instead and it worked so much better! I did my right toe first and as you can see the colors I used kind of got lost in one another. I used a glittery topcoat as well and it made it even harder to see. My left toe turned out much better, though!

NOTD: The entire solar system is in my hands…

I love science! The cosmos and the solar system especially are simply amazing. If you haven’t heard the Symphony of Science songs please take a moment to check them out! Music meets science and it’s simply amazing. My favorite is A Glorious Dawn, at the bottom of the page I linked 🙂

Symphony of Science is what first got me interested in our cosmos. I’d never really heard of Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, or any of the other amazing scientists featured in the songs and it simply blew my mind. After hearing the first few songs I rushed to watch Carl Sagan’s Cosmos series. Then I started watching more of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s works (NOVA ScienceNOW is a great show and it’s not Netflix!) and by then I was hooked. I was a cosmos junkie!

I recently watched The Pluto Files on Netflix which is based on Dr. Tyson’s book of the same name. It was all about how Dr. Tyson first set in motion Pluto being downgraded to a dwarf planet (which of course I’ll forgive him for!) and about just how much Pluto was loved by so many people. Check it out if you have Netflix Instant!!

And now, on to the art. Obviously the planets are not to scale and please excuse the bad art and artistic license taken in many instances 😉 Beware, there are tons of pics below! Mars and Uranus were impossible to photograph properly so I gave up and used the best of the ones I’d taken.

NOTD: Updated St Patty’s

So this NOTD post is actually a day late–I spent all day today with my mom and didn’t get the chance to post. I did have an awesome time having sushi and doing her nails though so I do hope you’ll all forgive me!!

As I mentioned in my last NOTD post with my St Patty’s nails, St Patrick’s day isn’t really one of my holidays. It’s a nice excuse to wear green though, especially on my nails! But I was done with the clover designs by the evening of St Patrick’s so I put a latex glove on my right hand to protect the rest of my polish and removed just the accent nails on my left hand, leaving me with a lovely clean slate!

I decided I wanted to do an up-close comparison of my other dark green, Sinful Colors San Francisco, since I wasn’t amazed by Suvi. I noticed when comparing Suvi on my nails to my nail wheel of San Francisco that they look very similar. I started with a base of San Francisco then used French tip guides to do the curve of Suvi. I added my last two green nail crystals (which I must buy more of asap!!) and was pretty happy with it.

When I finally was able to compare San Francisco and Suvi side by side on the same nail I was amazed at just how similar they are. They’re nearly identical  except that San Francisco is a bit lighter, more vibrant, and has a bit of microshimmer in it whereas Suvi is just a flat, deep, emerald green. In fact they were so similar my fancy camera could barely even catch the differences.
