NOTD: Blue color blocking

I’m sorry this post is a little rushed but I have SO much to work on right now, I’m working hard on moving my blog over to a REAL website so that I can integrate everything (blog, shop, whatever) into one place.

Today’s NOTD is another entry into a nail art contest. I love nail art contests, they give me the inspiration I’m often lacking! This theme was color blocking and it gave me an excellent opportunity to use my striping tape for the first time. I did the different colors freehand then covered the dividing line with striping tape, it left me with a very neat finished product!

I’m sorry the picture isn’t very good, I just took a quick shot with my camera phone and my new phone doesn’t seem to have as good of a camera as my old one–which is really weird because this one’s an iPhone 4S, the other one was just an iPhone 4! I’m going to try to start taking pictures with my fancy-pants camera more often so you can actually get an accurate idea of what the colors look like 🙂

NOTD: Patriotic

Today is Memorial day, and I wanted to honor the occasion with patriotic nails. I couldn’t decide which design I wanted so…I did one on each hand 🙂

Sadly, the big star spangles came off right after taking this picture….so I used little nail crystals instead! I liked the bigger ones for the official picture, though.

On my right hand I got to try the “grunge” look for the first time. I was amazed how this….

…became this!

And here’s a shot with my thumb in it (sometimes I wonder why I bother painting it, it almost never makes its way into my pictures!)

As a humorous side note, I thought it was a little bit funny that I used a Dutch nail polish (the blue, Hema) in a US patriotic manicure. It was the perfect shade, though 🙂

NOTD: Catching up!

This weekend was so busy I didn’t have any time to update you all on my nails! Saturday was spent with my mom celebrating Mother’s Day and then Sunday was spent with my honey’s family at a really nice winery for Mother’s Day. I had lots of fun!

First off, here’s a manicure inspired by a painting my good friend Kelli did for me. It’s a character from the video game Machinarium, and my art is nowhere near as good as hers but I’m still really happy with it.

Next up I did a special Mother’s Day mani on Saturday for my mom. This week’s theme is mom/mother’s day so they’re all done with her in mind!

I didn’t have a lot of time so I just removed my Machinarium art and replaced it with what was supposed to look like a tattoo banner that says “MOM”. Sorry for the blurry picture, it was so hard to even get one this “good”.

My mom is a tattoo fanatic and she’s always “bugging” me and saying I should get a tattoo…well, here it is!! I really like the idea of this mani but I don’t think I executed it very well. Next time I’ll do better, I’m sure, and there will definitely be a next time with this look!

Next up is the manicure I wore for Mother’s Day. My mom picked out the color combo which ended up matching the outfit I was going to wear very nicely! Can you tell Mom’s a fan of purple? 😉 Please excuse the tip wear, my base color wears really easily and I didn’t care enough to touch up >.>

Finally, on to today’s mani! It’s my favorite of the ones I’ve done recently. This one is inspired by my mom’s beliefs, paganism, and symbolizes the 5 elements of Wicca. From the pinky: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and Spirit. I’m definitely going to be wearing this one for a few days!!

NOTD: Purple squared

I love purple! Purple and blue are my favorite colors. Looking at my nail polish rack you wouldn’t be surprised how much I like purple and blue!

I went to bed with naked nails last night after my semi-failed experiment so I wanted something quick and simple before leaving the house today. I don’t think I’ve used Hema 08 yet that I got from my friend in the Netherlands. It’s a wonderful one-coater!! I probably could have gotten away with two coats but I wanted it to be pretty quick so I left it at one. After that I layered Milani Lavender. I used one coat on my index, middle, and pinky fingers, then two coats on my ring finger and thumb.

Lavender is so glitter-full! I could probably use three or four coats and get complete coverage. I really like the mixture of larger glitter and small glitter. It also seems to dry pretty quickly! Milani is very quickly going to the top of my “favorite brands” list, especially after this glitter, my nail stripers, and the 3D holographics. I got this at Target for pretty darn cheap and there are a ton of great colors, you should definitely check out their Jewel FX line!

NOTD: Mermaid tail

I’ve seen a few people doing “fish” nails recently, Spektor’s Nails seems to be the most commonly linked to (and for good reason, her nails turned out awesome). Polish All The Nails also did a “mermaid” style manicure using large glitter to form a kind of armor and I simply adore the look! I was feeling amazingly patient tonight and so I decided to try BOTH ideas for the first time!

In my celebratory “I haven’t bought polish for 30 days” haul I bought China Glaze Blue Iguana–a gorgeous shimmery, slightly duochrome-y blue. It’s a little sheer but I like it! Here’s Blue Iguana by itself after 2 coats.

After finishing my base color (this picture really doesn’t do it justice!) I grabbed a few coordinating shades of blue and teal. I even got to use 2 more colors I’d never used before, one from my international swap from the Netherlands and one I picked up at Walgreens weeks ago. After about an hour of dotting I ended up with a pretty neat effect! next time I’ll space the dots out a bit more but for a first try I’m really diggin’ it.

On my pinky I started working on the “nail armor” look…wow, I am glad I decided to start on my smallest nail, that’s for sure! The glitter I used was really small and if you look closely you can see that on the left side (closest to the edge of my hand) of my nail the glitter is close together…as it gets further to the right the glitter gets spaced out further, lol. It was really tough to get them spaced closely enough and placing such small glitter was really killing me. I alternated between blue and green glitter, though you can’t really tell the difference. I love the “disco ball” look it gives and I’ll definitely try it again…but probably either with bigger glitter or spaced out further.

NOTD: Delicate print

My sweetheart helped with today’s NOTD! This week’s theme is vibrant and I just couldn’t pick a color. The only color I kept thinking of was bright orange and I just didn’t want to use that for a full mani. They ended up choosing this one (which I got in an international swap from my good friend Amy in the Netherlands!!) that I hadn’t had the chance to use yet.

Normally I think pinks make me look kind of “mother”ish but I just loved this color in the bottle. It’s weird because my mom only ever wore light browns, never pinks, but nonetheless my brain thinks “MOMMY” when I see pink nails on myself (which I am grateful at this time to not be one). Today’s mani turned out so pretty, though! Crystal Chrome is arguably the most perfect polish to stamp with, and I got it years ago for only $1! I have a light pink Sally Hansen chrome I’ll have to try stamping with too and I’ve heard the new Quick Color pens work great.

It was fun using the stamp I chose but orienting it differently. You can see that the big flower is in different places on all nails (and isn’t on my pinky at all!), but I think I like my middle finger and ring finger most. Next time I’m going to try doing the stamp upside down. I absolutely love how the silver stamping looks over this pink, and as usual clean up after stamping was so easy! I’m always so scared to topcoat though, I tend to smear, but thankfully I waited long enough to topcoat this mani.

NOTD: The Last Unicorn

This may be my Pièce de résistance manicure. Inspired by my favorite cartoon from my childhood, incorporating all nail art techniques I’ve tried my hand at, and despite the art not turning out perfectly I am so pleased! Stamping, water marble, precision brushes, dotting tools, crystals, and taping–oh my! This was one epic manicure. 27 colors, 2 stamping plates, 3+ hours, and years of nostalgia at my fingertips.

The Last Unicorn is one of my two favorite movies from my childhood, the other being The Labyrinth (and later in life, The Nightmare Before Christmas, which will most certainly get its own manicure come October). It’s one of those movies that I could watch every day and never get tired of it. I’m 24 years old and to this day I still tear up during the movie, especially at the end. I even have the book, er, somewhere.

Neverland Nail Blog is having a nail art contest with the theme “Do you believe in magic?” I wasn’t entirely sure of the specifics for what I wanted to do but I knew I needed to do it based on The Last Unicorn. I love the idea of having a theme and doing each nail with a different character/aspect. The Unicorn/Amalthea and the Unicorns got two nails each because I love them so much!

Now, I know my art isn’t amazing but please indulge me–I’m proud of this and my ego is fragile 😉 Click the pics for larger versions!
