NOTD: Catching up!

This weekend was so busy I didn’t have any time to update you all on my nails! Saturday was spent with my mom celebrating Mother’s Day and then Sunday was spent with my honey’s family at a really nice winery for Mother’s Day. I had lots of fun!

First off, here’s a manicure inspired by a painting my good friend Kelli did for me. It’s a character from the video game Machinarium, and my art is nowhere near as good as hers but I’m still really happy with it.

Next up I did a special Mother’s Day mani on Saturday for my mom. This week’s theme is mom/mother’s day so they’re all done with her in mind!

I didn’t have a lot of time so I just removed my Machinarium art and replaced it with what was supposed to look like a tattoo banner that says “MOM”. Sorry for the blurry picture, it wasย soย hard to even get one this “good”.

My mom is a tattoo fanatic and she’s always “bugging” me and saying I should get a tattoo…well, here it is!! I really like the idea of this mani but I don’t think I executed it very well. Next time I’ll do better, I’m sure, and there will definitely be a next time with this look!

Next up is the manicure I wore for Mother’s Day. My mom picked out the color combo which ended up matching the outfit I was going to wear very nicely! Can you tell Mom’s a fan of purple? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Please excuse the tip wear, my base color wears really easily and I didn’t care enough to touch up >.>

Finally, on to today’s mani! It’s my favorite of the ones I’ve done recently. This one is inspired by my mom’s beliefs, paganism, and symbolizes the 5 elements of Wicca. From the pinky: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and Spirit. I’m definitely going to be wearing this one for a few days!!

  • Kyoti’s Nails The Hero (pinky) and Hey, Listen! (index) (working names, but keep an eye out for the whole line! Read more about them here)

NOTD: The entire solar system is in my hands…

I love science! The cosmos and the solar system especially are simply amazing. If you haven’t heard the Symphony of Science songs please take a moment to check them out! Music meets science and it’s simply amazing. My favorite is A Glorious Dawn, at the bottom of the page I linked ๐Ÿ™‚

Symphony of Science is what first got me interested in our cosmos. I’d never really heard of Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, or any of the other amazing scientists featured in the songs and it simply blew my mind. After hearing the first few songs I rushed to watch Carl Sagan’s Cosmos series. Then I started watching more of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s works (NOVA ScienceNOW is a great show and it’s not Netflix!) and by then I was hooked. I was a cosmos junkie!

I recently watched The Pluto Files on Netflix which is based on Dr. Tyson’s book of the same name. It was all about how Dr. Tyson first set in motion Pluto being downgraded to a dwarf planet (which of course I’ll forgive him for!) and about just how much Pluto was loved by so many people. Check it out if you have Netflix Instant!!

And now, on to the art. Obviously the planets are not to scale and please excuse the bad art and artistic license taken in many instances ๐Ÿ˜‰ Beware, there are tons of pics below! Mars and Uranus were impossible to photograph properly so I gave up and used the best of the ones I’d taken.

NOTD: Simple black with flakies

So my Leaf on the Wind mani started getting major tip wear very quickly ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I think I type too much!

Friday night I went out to dinner (and saw Hunger Games!!) and I had to go to bed pretty soon after since I had a big day planned for Saturday. I frantically took my polish off and replaced it with something simple that would still look a little fancy so I had to reach for Motley, which I’ve only used once or twice since I got it.

It was the perfect combo! Dreary weather with a bit of sun made for the perfect weather to see the color changes in Motley, and it felt good to go back to my roots with black polish ๐Ÿ™‚

NOTD: Girl on Fire

Let me preface this by saying: I amย notย an artist. And I’m not happy with the way this manicure came out. But the only way to get better is to practice so….I’m posting it anyways ๐Ÿ™‚ Hopefully some of my lovely readers (whom I hope there are actually a few and I’m not just deluding myself ;-D) will have constructive criticism for me! If you have any tips on freehand painting pleeeeease let me know!

This manicure was inspired by the Hunger Games. I’ve just finished reading the first book and I’m going to be starting book 2 tonight. I think I read the whole thing in the span of a week, I stayed up until 2AM reading every night!! I haven’t enjoyed a book this much in years ๐Ÿ™‚ If you haven’t read it you should definitely check it out. As many of my fellow lacqueristas know there’s a movie coming out this weekend. I almost never go out to the movies but…I might have to check this one out. I can’t wait for it to be on DVD or Netflix!

For my first attempt at painting fire I think I’m ok with it (I know, at the beginning of this post I said I wasn’t happy with it…but that was like 20 minutes ago when I wrote that!!), I’ll probably like it more tomorrow once I accept that it’s not perfect, but it’s my best and that’s good enough for now ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve included pictures of before and after adding glitter to my fire, I’m not sure if I like it better with or without the glitter. The glitter evened out the colors in my flames and hid some flaws but it may have obscured it too much… what do you think?

NOTD: St Patty’s

So I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do a Saint Patrick’s day manicure since it’s not a holiday I celebrate, drinking isn’t really my thing, but I’ve been promising myself I’d give Suvi another chance before sending her away to be swapped… I might still try to swap this as Sinful Colors San Francisco is fairly similar, not quite as dark of a green but still close enough. At least now I can’t say I didn’t give it an honest try, though.

I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted this manicure to look when I started off. I put on the heart-shaped nail crystals in a four-leaf clover pattern and then realized I wanted MORE GOLD so I carefully put some Golden Goddess around it. I also didn’t realize Key to my Art was quite so opaque, I thought there was more space between the gold flecks in there (which is how it looks in the bottle) but I’m happy with how it turned out. I even did a little clover on my thumb using my dotting tool! Turned out way better than I’d expected.

This is my first manicure I’ve ever done with Seche Vite so I’ve gotten some shrinkage on the sides and a couple bubbles but I did remember to wrap my tips! Hopefully I’ll get better at applying it soon, I’m not used to applying polish to semi-wet nails so it was very weird, I kept worrying I’d smudge all my polish off ๐Ÿ˜ก Also the smell is soย strong.

Sorry the closeup of my thumb is so blurry, it was impossible to get a good photo of it.
