Just a quick blurb about this one, my bed is calling me!
I’m totally not sticking to my space theme this week, but whatever! I wanted to do a little manicure inspired by my favorite author, Anne Bishop. My all-time favorite book series is the Black Jewels series (so good, definitely check it out!). I wanted a little update to yesterday’s holo mani and I noticed the colors were pretty similar to Belladonna’s cover. I added a few little nail crystals to my accent nails and called it a day–I was feeling pretty lazy, what can I say? 😉
Then I wanted to do something with my right hand–it never gets any blog time! So I used Milani HD on an accent nail and did a teeny tiny tiara on it :3 Isn’t it adorable??
Ever since I got my first holo from Copious (still stunned I got it for a PENNY omg) I’ve become a little bit obsessed with them. I went very quickly from zero holo to 5 of them 😀 I really like Milani’s holo line, reasonably priced, pretty easy to find, and some very pretty colors.
This week’s theme is “space” and I’m getting a little sick of doing nail art, I wanted something “simple”. I settled on using Milani’s “Cyberspace“, which is a very loose interpretation of “space” 😉 I tried putting some star glitter on one nail but they didn’t stick well so I ended up redoing them.
I decided to do a little bit of experimenting with holos this time. First off: does putting a topcoat over holo really make a difference? Answer: yes! You can see in the photo below that on the left I’ve added a topcoat, on the right there’s no topcoat. On the right you can still see the linear rainbow effect, that effect doesnt’ show up as well on the left (topcoated).
Left: topcoat, right: no topcoat
Next I wanted to know if I could “make my own holo”. I put on two layers of e.l.f. Metal Madness then put one coat of HD (silver holo) over it. It gives a really good holo effect! It’s not exactly like it would be if it was an actual holo color but it still looks great. My thumb has Metal Madness by itself and my ring finger has Metal Madness plus HD.
Thumb: Metal Madness, ring: metal madness + HD
Here’s the finished manicure! I’m really happy with it 🙂
I adore Symphony of Science. Symphony of Science is a collection of scientists’ quotes set to music. Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Bill Nye, Brian Cox, Jane Goodall, Richard Feynman, and so many more. SoS is what really got me interested in science and space; I’d always been interested in science to a degree in school but it didn’t capture my attention the way SoS did. I haven’t bought music in years but even on a limited income I bought the Symphony of Science collection because I just find it so amazing. Please check it out, the person who makes it is wonderful!
I was inspired by the 31-day challenge for this pedi. One of the days is “Inspired by a Song” and the song “A Glorious Dawn” has always been my favorite. There’s a line in the song in which Carl Sagan says “A still more glorious dawn awaits; not a sunrise but a galaxy rise”, and the mental image that conjures is simply mindblowing. I try to capture my mental image in this pedi but it still doesn’t do it justice.
Doesn’t it look sort of like a galaxy rising over the side of the moon, though? Next week’s theme is space….man, I’m gonna love this upcoming week!!
I love science! The cosmos and the solar system especially are simply amazing. If you haven’t heard the Symphony of Science songs please take a moment to check them out! Music meets science and it’s simply amazing. My favorite is A Glorious Dawn, at the bottom of the page I linked 🙂
Symphony of Science is what first got me interested in our cosmos. I’d never really heard of Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, or any of the other amazing scientists featured in the songs and it simply blew my mind. After hearing the first few songs I rushed to watch Carl Sagan’s Cosmos series. Then I started watching more of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s works (NOVA ScienceNOW is a great show and it’s not Netflix!) and by then I was hooked. I was a cosmos junkie!
I recently watched The Pluto Files on Netflix which is based on Dr. Tyson’s book of the same name. It was all about how Dr. Tyson first set in motion Pluto being downgraded to a dwarf planet (which of course I’ll forgive him for!) and about just how much Pluto was loved by so many people. Check it out if you have Netflix Instant!!
And now, on to the art. Obviously the planets are not to scale and please excuse the bad art and artistic license taken in many instances 😉 Beware, there are tons of pics below! Mars and Uranus were impossible to photograph properly so I gave up and used the best of the ones I’d taken.
I used a ton of polishes to get this mani. Hopefully I remember all of them…
I picked up some 16mm cabochons using a $5 credit to an site similar to Etsy. I only paid a penny for 12 of cabochons 😀 However I didn’t realize that they had silver backings until after I’d purchased them. My solution? File the silver backing off using an old nail file! It worked great, it left some scratches in the plastic but once I put the first coat of polish onto it the scratches disappeared.
I’ve been wanting to do galaxy nails for a while but I haven’t had the patience. I took this as an opportunity to try out the galaxy look without having to sit and wait for my nails to dry. I’m quite pleased with how they turned out!! For anyone thinking of trying this I have one suggestion: don’t try to do the little white dots like you normally do (like on these), the dots get magnified a ton by the plastic (or glass if you’re using it) and it just looks funky. Glitter made a great first layer though!
I’m not sure which colors were used for which cabochon but here’s what’s on my workstation.
Love & Beauty holo glitter
Sally Hansen Spectrum
Essence Where is the Party?
Essence Blue Addicted
Sally Hansen Purple Potion
Prisma black jelly with silver glitter
e.l.f. Metal Madness
Now I just need to find some settings to put them into!
So I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do a Saint Patrick’s day manicure since it’s not a holiday I celebrate, drinking isn’t really my thing, but I’ve been promising myself I’d give Suvi another chance before sending her away to be swapped… I might still try to swap this as Sinful Colors San Francisco is fairly similar, not quite as dark of a green but still close enough. At least now I can’t say I didn’t give it an honest try, though.
I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted this manicure to look when I started off. I put on the heart-shaped nail crystals in a four-leaf clover pattern and then realized I wanted MORE GOLD so I carefully put some Golden Goddess around it. I also didn’t realize Key to my Art was quite so opaque, I thought there was more space between the gold flecks in there (which is how it looks in the bottle) but I’m happy with how it turned out. I even did a little clover on my thumb using my dotting tool! Turned out way better than I’d expected.
This is my first manicure I’ve ever done with Seche Vite so I’ve gotten some shrinkage on the sides and a couple bubbles but I did remember to wrap my tips! Hopefully I’ll get better at applying it soon, I’m not used to applying polish to semi-wet nails so it was very weird, I kept worrying I’d smudge all my polish off 😡 Also the smell is so strong.
Sorry the closeup of my thumb is so blurry, it was impossible to get a good photo of it.
So as you may have seen in my earlier post I got nail mail today! I’d been planning manicures since I found out I won the Nails Adored giveaway and I knew I had to try Scandalous first. I’ve also been meaning to use up some of my nail crystals and nail stickers I bought recently so I figured I’d just sort of throw everything I had into this mani…. I may have overdone it just a smidge 😉
Oh well, I don’t care if I’ve overdone it, I’m really happy with how this turned out! I can’t wait to see how Scandalous looks in the sunlight tomorrow 🙂 I wanted to avoid using more of this gorgeous color than I needed to so I put a single base coat of black on most of my nails, then did accents with purple to lighten how Scandalous would look once it was painted on.
