I adore Symphony of Science. Symphony of Science is a collection of scientists’ quotes set to music. Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Bill Nye, Brian Cox, Jane Goodall, Richard Feynman, and so many more. SoS is what really got me interested in science and space; I’d always been interested in science to a degree in school but it didn’t capture my attention the way SoS did. I haven’t bought music in years but even on a limited income I bought the Symphony of Science collection because I just find it so amazing. Please check it out, the person who makes it is wonderful!
I was inspired by the 31-day challenge for this pedi. One of the days is “Inspired by a Song” and the song “A Glorious Dawn” has always been my favorite. There’s a line in the song in which Carl Sagan says “A still more glorious dawn awaits; not a sunrise but a galaxy rise”, and the mental image that conjures is simply mindblowing. I try to capture my mental image in this pedi but it still doesn’t do it justice.
Doesn’t it look sort of like a galaxy rising over the side of the moon, though? Next week’s theme is space….man, I’m gonna love this upcoming week!!
I’ve seen a few people doing “fish” nails recently, Spektor’s Nails seems to be the most commonly linked to (and for good reason, her nails turned out awesome). Polish All The Nails also did a “mermaid” style manicure using large glitter to form a kind of armor and I simply adore the look! I was feeling amazingly patient tonight and so I decided to try BOTH ideas for the first time!
In my celebratory “I haven’t bought polish for 30 days” haul I bought China Glaze Blue Iguana–a gorgeous shimmery, slightly duochrome-y blue. It’s a little sheer but I like it! Here’s Blue Iguana by itself after 2 coats.
After finishing my base color (this picture really doesn’t do it justice!) I grabbed a few coordinating shades of blue and teal. I even got to use 2 more colors I’d never used before, one from my international swap from the Netherlands and one I picked up at Walgreens weeks ago. After about an hour of dotting I ended up with a pretty neat effect! next time I’ll space the dots out a bit more but for a first try I’m really diggin’ it.
On my pinky I started working on the “nail armor” look…wow, I am glad I decided to start on my smallest nail, that’s for sure! The glitter I used was really small and if you look closely you can see that on the left side (closest to the edge of my hand) of my nail the glitter is close together…as it gets further to the right the glitter gets spaced out further, lol. It was really tough to get them spaced closely enough and placing such small glitter was really killing me. I alternated between blue and green glitter, though you can’t really tell the difference. I love the “disco ball” look it gives and I’ll definitely try it again…but probably either with bigger glitter or spaced out further.
Ok so tomorrow is officially day 1 of week 2 for my challenge and the theme is vibrant, but as I mentioned in yesterday’s post I’ve decided weekends I can do whichever theme I want. And today I wanted vibrant nails!
Today’s nails are inspired (loosely) by a peacock’s feathers. I always think of peacocks when I see purple, blue, and green together and so those are the colors I worked into this mani! My glitter (which was so hard to photograph) is blue, purple, and clear, and the color used to stamp with is a green/blue duochrome. I love how subtle the stamping is, this was my first time using this stamp and I can tell I’ll be using it again! This is also my first time doing matte over glitter and I really like how it looks. I hope you all enjoy it, too!
Good news, everyone! I’ll never have to worry about picking colors for my manicures again! Now that I’ve swatched all my colors (I’ll have a whole blog post about that soon-ish!) and put them into a spreadsheet I can just use a random number generator to pick my color(s)! 😀 Now the only problem is I need help picking out what sort of nail art to do 😉
Since I skimped and didn’t use a base coat for yesterday’s Scandalous mani I got a chip late last night, just a few hours after I’d finished 😦 I expected it’d chip quickly but not quite that quickly! Oh well, it gave me an excuse to try out something new even though I’ve been lacking inspiration recently.
So I grabbed a couple numbers from a random number generator and went to work. The first color it picked was Sally Hansen’s DVD which I don’t like layered just over the nude nail so I had it pick another color from my blues. It picked a wonderful color to be paired with DVD–Wild n Crazy’s Crush on You! I normally don’t wear the same base colors or even glitters more than once a month and I just wore Crush on You two weeks ago. But I can’t argue with entropy, and the computer gods had decided. I picked out a couple other glitters to layer over it and in the end I came out with a sparkle-fest!
I’ve added in a blurry photo to try to show the sparkle but it still can’t capture some of the lovely microglitters, especially Busted! Once again I regret that I do my nails at night so often, I have to wait until tomorrow morning to see it in the sunlight 😦
So I’ve had this bottle of Wild n Crazy’s Crush on You since my 8th grade graduation ceremony about 11 years ago. This color’s so old I couldn’t find a single swatch of it on Google’s image search! This was WAY before my nail polish addiction so I haven’t worn it since that day, but I finally decided I wanted to work on finishing off the bottle so I can justify getting a new one to replace it 😉 It’s still got a few manicures worth in the bottle but I made a dent!
Sadly, so did everything I touched!! (Made a dent, that is.) I swear, I’d put on my last coat about an hour prior (AND my quick-dry topcoat) but I still kept getting dents in it 😦 So I snapped a couple pictures and then took the whole thing off to try again with a whole new look. I added some holographic glitter to my silver nail but they didn’t show up in the pics. Thankfully, my next mani turned out pretty good, so keep an eye open for it in my next post!
So I got Zoya Ki during Zoya’s flash promo deals around Christmas, I also got 5 other colors but for some reason I just never felt like wearing Ki before today. Boy have I been missing out!!! Even just in the bottle it’s amazing, it’s less of a duochrome and more of a QUADrochrome or something because I can see purple, yellow, green, and even a twinge of blue! I also picked up China Glaze Latticed Lilac on sale at Sally’s today so of course I had to work it into my NOTD.
The result? HUGE success! I started off planning on layering Ki until it was opaque but I was really unhappy with how sheer it was by itself so I did a single coat of Wet n Wild Black Creme first. I have to preserve my expensive polishes whenever possible!!
I couldn’t show all the wonderful color in just one picture so you guys get two angles!
