NOTD: Global Reddit Meetup Day!

As many of you know, since there’s where you first found my blog, I love reddit! For those of you who don’t know, reddit is a social media site where people can upload pictures, new articles, ask the community for help and input, whatever! There’s even a community (called a subreddit) dedicated just to nail polish stuff 😀

Saturday is a global meetup day for reddit, a day when all across the world a bunch of redditors all gather to hang out. I decided I had to do something special for the occasion, so I did some reddit imagery. When you like something on reddit you give it an upvote so it gets more visibility, and when you don’t like something you downvote it. Two fingers on my hand correlate pretty well with the upvote and downvote system…Well, I’ll just let you see for yourself 😉

NOTD: Cute purple owl

I entered this manicure into a “cute nails” nail art contest (if you can spare a Like for me I’d be very grateful!), I almost didn’t enter but…how could I turn down the chance at a cute mani?! I was trying to think of adorable animals I could put on my nails (because animals are the epitome of “cute” for me!), I flip-flopped between piggies, kitties, penguins….and then it hit me–owls. Who doesn’t love owls?! Ok, maybe small rodents, but I don’t think any rodents read my blog or care too much about nail art 😉

I decided to do a purple owl because…well, purple is a wonderful color, and I thought having a bright color would just up the “cute” factor a bit over a brown or other “normal” colored owl. I was a little impatient with this one so I freehanded all of it, I wish I’d taken the time to make my French tips a little neater but, as I’ve been saying a lot lately, more practice with freehand can’t hurt!

NOTD: Rainbow crystals over grey ombre

I have to admit, I am very surprised at just how much I like this mani. I mean, I thought it was a neat idea but seeing it on my fingers….just wow!

I’m really loving this week’s theme, I’m such a sucker for rainbow 🙂 I’m hoping to give some people inspiration for the nail art contest I’m hosting this month. I’ve already gotten 6 entries, which you can check out on my Facebook page, and I am loving what everyone’s coming up with! Remember that there are two categories and two winners, one for amateur and one for advanced, so don’t let the other entries discourage you if you think your nail art skills aren’t as advanced as theirs! All are welcome.

I wasn’t sure at first what I wanted the base color for my rainbow crystals to be. I asked a few friends and someone suggested black–I’d been considering white before but black just sounded so much nicer. I actually decided to do an ombre gradient for this, my thumb is white and it transitions to black on the pinky. I like this idea much better than I liked the plain white background idea! I actually only had 2 shades of grey, a light and a dark, so for my middle finger I mixed a drop of dark and 2 drops of light. I think it turned out great!

I’ve also been invited to march in the San Diego Pride Parade! I really hope I’m able to do it 😀

NOTD: The good Alice

I couldn’t figure out what to do after yesterday’s Alice mani started chipping. Looking through my Pinterest inspiration board I saw this and knew I had to follow up Bad Alice with Good Alice! It doesn’t quite follow this week’s theme but oh well!

Alice in Wonderland is still one of my all-time favorite cartoon movies. I watch it every few months 🙂 I hope you can all tell who inspired which nail, but just in case my art is that bad…from thumb to pinky: White Rabbit, Alice, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, Red Queen.

I did this all freehand, it didn’t turn out perfect but I’m still really happy with it. I need more practice with freehand, I have a whole week of it coming up in a little over a month!

Bad, blurry close-up of my favorite nail, inspired by Alice herself. Please ignore my cuticles! They are in need of some TLC.

NOTD: Black and white gradient with crystal accent

One of my favorite blogs is having a nail art contest and the theme is “black and white” You can only use black and white, which was tough!

My first idea that I’d had was done by someone else right before I was about to start on my nails–thankfully I checked the other entries before starting! This was my second idea and I’m so happy with how it turned out, especially my accent nail. Check out how it looked halfway through 🙂

I’m definitely gonna do this accent nail again, I think it’d look awesome as part of an ombre mani or with other colors.

The second part of my mani was a sponged gradient and dots. My black is so opaque, it was tough to get a good gradient, but it turned out pretty good. I really like the dots that swap colors when the gradient starts 😀

NOTD: A teeny tiara on my toes!

My mom is the Queen. Therefore, I am the Princess! This week’s theme is mom/Mother’s day and I was inspired by her and by my tiara mani from a few days ago.

My toes have been naked for 2 days so I needed something and I needed it quick! I love doing nail art on my toes since I only do them every week or two and especially since I have the cutest open toe shoes that I’ve been wearing a lot lately.

I love these holo polishes! HD (silver) ended up a little thin and I should have done another coat, but Cyberspace was perfect with 2 coats. Sadly I lost some of the holo by using topcoat but it still looks great, you just don’t get the same “rainbow” effect as you do without topcoat. I can’t wait to show these off in my cute shoes!

NOTD: Domestic violence awareness

Tomorrow is another important day to me. I know, just a few days ago was important too, but tomorrow is important for another reason. Fair warning–this post is going to get kind of personal and might trigger some people.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of a day that changed my life. April 26, 2011, I left my girlfriend who had been emotionally, mentally, verbally, and physically abusing me for the last 3-6 months. The final physical attack was the last straw, I knew I didn’t deserve it so I got out of the apartment and called the police on her. I moved everything I owned out of her apartment that same day and have had no direct contact with her since. In the past year I’ve endured anxiety, paranoia, depression, and fear, but in experiencing these emotions I learned a lot about myself, my strengths, and my value as a person and as a friend.

Just recently I received a follow request from her on twitter–a request I quickly denied, but not before reading a few of her recent posts. One of which included an open letter she had written on her blog. The letter spoke of how she has a history of losing control and harming those she cared for. Without naming me directly she acknowledged her wrongdoings and apologized for the harm she caused. She also spoke of how she’s working hard to change herself for the better. All of these things are things that 6 months ago I would have never believed and never thought would happen, and when I read her post it opened up a flood of emotions. To her credit, it was truly the best way to attempt to make amends–no direct contact but acknowledging and apologizing for her wrongdoings.

I will never speak to that woman again, but I wish her well in her endeavors and I sincerely hope she can overcome her shortcomings and become a loving, happy, successful person. If she’s reading this: you’ve taught me much of who I am as a person, and though I wish I’d learned these things in different ways I have learned lessons that I may not have learned otherwise. I am not ashamed that I fell victim to manipulation and abuse, it’s nothing that is shameful, and in fact I am proud to be a survivor, not solely a victim.

In honor of the anniversary of my freedom and the rebirth into the person I am today I’m bending the rules on my 13-week challenge.

If you know anyone who you suspect is in an abusive relationship please go here to learn how you can help. Know that you can’t save someone who doesn’t want to be saved, and do your best to simply be there for them, let them know they can trust you, and love them unconditionally.

Purple is the color of the domestic violence awareness ribbon so I chose purple as my main color for this manicure. I have to point out just how shiny the purple becomes after topcoat.
