NOTD: Christmas in July

I spontaneously wanted to wear red nail polish today. Don’t ask me why because I have no idea. I have probably 20 pinks/reds but I wear them maybe once a month, but I can’t bear to part with most of them! I think red nail polish just makes me think of being a mom too much, which is a thought that terrifies me!!

So to break up the red, “Mom” feeling, I decided to do something fun. A blog I follow was doing a Christmas in July nail art contest and another was doing a season-inspired contest (I think a mish-mash of winter and summer counts!) and so I got my creative gears goin’. Here’s what I came up with:

And descriptions of my inspiration for each nail:

* The tinsel that continues to clog up the vacuum every. Single. Time.

* The glitter. Oh god, the glitter. Why does it never come off?!

* The Christmas tree you’ve been meaning to take down since January but have never quite gotten to.

* The re-gifted present that you can’t for the life of you imagine why Great Aunt Ethel thought you’d like it.

* The final credit card payment for your extravagant Christmas…just in time to start buying for this year!

This was tons of fun to do and I’m really glad I took the dive and participated. I generally don’t like Christmas-y stuff, but this was fun enough to make up for it! 😉

NOTD: Link, he come to town!

Let’s start with a cute song and video, shall we?

I haven’t actually gotten the chance to try on my Legend of Zelda collection‘s final formulas–how ridiculous is that?!

I accidentally mixed up an extra Link mini so I’ve decided to keep it for myself 🙂 I’ve also had China Glaze Agro for like 2 months and haven’t used it yet even though I’ve been dying to try it on. So tonight I decided to use both of them! And boy do they look great together. Link has gold, green, brown, and blue glitter. I just love the blue since it’s such a stark contrast to the more low-key colors.

I haven’t bothered to topcoat this yet so it’s not as smooth as it could be but I’m actually not sure how long I’ll be keeping this on–I have a design I just need to try!

Nail mail!

This weekend has been great for nail mail! I got three different polish sets on Friday and Saturday 🙂

I got both the China Glaze and Kleancolor sets from Copious and I paid only a penny for China Glaze and about $1 for the Kleancolors. The Color Club Take Wing collection was a gift from my friend JohJoh, she asked me for polish suggestions and I suggested she check out the Take Wing collection, she liked it so much she got me the entire set as a thank you! 🙂 Thanks so much, JohJoh! I can’t wait to try them all ❤

The two rainbow sets (Kleancolor and Color Club) are perfect since I’ve been doing a ton of rainbow manis lately, I’m sure you’ll all be seeing swatches or nail art with these soon!

NOTD: Rainbow accent

This week’s theme is officially rainbow! I had an idea in mind for this but it didn’t turn out how I’d liked, but I’m far too tired to attempt it again so it’ll have to wait. I’ll probably try again tomorrow, so keep an eye out for it!

I’m horrible at cutting tape evenly so I tried a new method tonight. I took a ruler and measured out how far apart I wanted each stripe (2.5mm in this case) and then using my ruler as a straightedge I cut the tape with my Xacto blade–perfectly straight, perfectly measured strips every time! Then I placed all the strips (keeping them as together as possible) on my nail, painted one color, removed the tape for the next section and very carefully painted the next color as well. By doing this I was able to still get the crisp lines of tape but I didn’t have to wait to tape off both parts, the only issue is I had to be very careful when painting the portion that was closest to my previous stripe, but that wasn’t too tough.

Just a reminder that I do have a nail art contest going on right now–make sure you check it out, I’ve already gotten 3 entries that I’ve posted to my Facebook page. I’ll be accepting entries until June 30th and I’ll have two winners, so make sure you enter and share with your friends!

NOTD: The Ages of Myst

Note: I’m not a huge fan of flowers so I’m actually doing a second week of geeky/gamer nails for my personal challenge. Enjoy!

Ah, Myst. Myst was the first game I ever played through entirely on my own. I had the walkthrough book since I was only 11, but I still got through it without asking another person for help. Sometimes it was scary, sometimes it was so hard I wanted to just give up, but in the end I made it! I still replay it every so often, too, along with the rest of the games in the series.

I’m such a big fan of the game that when I recently came across my original walkthrough book, which was falling apart, I salvaged the map pages and mounted them on my wall!

There are 5 areas in Myst, the 1 main island (center picture above) and then 4 other areas. Each nail in this mani has been inspired by each of the other areas (Ages).

L-R Selenitic, Stoneship, Mechanical, Channelwood

For Selenitic and Stoneship I had to get a little creative. The Selenitic nail was inspired by the keyboard you use to open the age, specifically the diagram from the book to show you which keys to press. The stamp was a pain to use all those really thin lines took about 5 tries to pick up fully, and even then it got a little wobbly when I stamped it onto the nail. I hilighted the keys just like they were in Myst, too!

My Stoneship nail is even more obscure. In the Stoneship age you need to press a certain button to turn on the lights. The button is one in a series of buttons around a compass rose image, so I tried to recreate the compass rose on my nail. Not bad, for what I had on hand! It would’ve been nice if it had been centered but my approximating skills were off a bit.

The Mechanical Age and Channelwood were the easiest. A series of gears for Mechanical and a tree trunk for Channelwood. I actually used a zebra print stamp for the Channelwood nail, I just turned it 90 degrees so it looked like a tree pattern!

This was such a fun manicure, I might try to do Riven (the sequel) nails soon!!

NOTD: American McGee’s Alice

This week’s theme is Geeky/Gamer!

I’ve been wearing my Zelda-inspired polishes since Sunday night and I got my first chip last night, which means new manicure time!!

Today’s manicure is inspired by American McGee’s Alice game. I haven’t played the sequel but the original was awesome! I wanted to recreate Alice’s dress from the game and I’m very happy with how it turned out! I think you can definitely see that it was inspired by her dress from the cover below.

I think it’s pretty plain to see that the image above inspired my manicure! I’m getting better at freehand art, too, which makes me a very happy girl 🙂

  • Milani Black Sketch
  • China Glaze Frostbite

NOTD: Magnetic + Stamping

Another Mom-inspired manicure today! Mom’s favorite color is purple and she loves butterflies 🙂

I actually took my polish off late last night and went almost a whole 24 hours with naked nails! I went out of the house three times, I was so self-conscious 😡 I made up for it though, I’m really happy with this one!

I’m getting better at using the magnet for my Magnetix polish. I’m trying to figure out if I can sort of rotate the magnet around my nail to get better magnetizing but so far it only works sometimes–other times it totally makes the design look weird. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
